Points to ponder about Dots.

Dots.

What’s so special about dots? Dots are ubiquitous. There, I just used one.

Dots also take different forms in different fields. A full stop in English, a point in geometry, polka-dots in fashion, etc. But the astounding thing is that in English, a dot is used to end things, but in geometry it’s the start of things. According to me, the two most powerful functions you can have is to start or to end things. For instance, to start a new trend or to end old stereotypes. It’s hard enough to do one of these, but a tiny no-dimensional element is given the responsibility to do both. Startling right?

A dot is like an atom. Indeed, I think a dot is that important I’d like to compare it with an atom. An atom is the smallest particle known to man and this makes up everything from humans to a pencil tip. This is similar to a dot, which is a weeny thing, which plays an important role in punctuation, decimal, geometry all large and vital fields, as well. We always value something when we lose them. So, let’s imagine a world without dots. Our sentences can’t have breaks, we can’t start a line or a letter, we can’t have decimals, we can’t pin-point a place on a map and we won’t have the well-known fashion statement the Polka-dots!

It’s a wonder to me and also an inquisitive thought that, why we give the tiniest entity to some of the most significant affairs, and with such a spot, I think it deserves recognition. Dots were invented by Aristophanes of Byzantium about 2,300 years ago, and the definition of a dot or a period has never changed till date. A dot is always known for only being a full-stop, a punctuation or a just a decimal point.

START

A start is very important, a start is always the first step towards anything. A dot is like an atom of figures. To write a word or to draw even the simplest figure, a line, the starting point is a dot. A dot leads to another dot and another, together they connect, reveal hidden and unknown information, as Steve Jobs strongly believed, creativity starts here…

END

The end of things is as important as the start of things. The non-dimensional dot definitely does this too. As a punctuation it helps us to end our sentences, chapters, essays, stories, letters, texts & so on. Why is it good to end things like a dot, and not continue developing something like a comma? With a dot, we have more opportunities and exposure to new doors, new thoughts and ideas. But, developing a thought with a comma doesn’t give much scope for exploration, as people say, every ending is a beginning…

A closing dot -

I indubitably agree with Wassily Kandinsky a Russian painter who says “Everything starts with a dot.
